  1. You’re afraid of how your life would change if you succeeded.
  2. You’re afraid of failing and how the lack of money or security could change your life.
  3. You’re afraid to hear the judgment of others who think you’re needlessly taking a foolish risk.
  4. You’ve chosen a business that is not a good fit for who you are.
  5. You’re thinking way too hard about how to get started.
  6. Or you want the freedom of being your own boss but don’t know which business to start.

Good News

  • You’re creation has meaning and that means that you have the capacity to create something extraordinary.
  • You’re life experience has not been accidental; every experience has forged your core capacities to create in a way that’s unique to you.
  • Yes, your individuality can be leveraged in a way that gives you a clear marketplace advantage.

You hesitate to start your own business because the majority of your thoughts up until now feed that hesitation.  What can you do about that?

The easiest and most effective way to take Einstein’s advice is to set aside your over-analysis which causes you to come to limiting conclusions. Your new way of thinking needs to be open-ended so new possibilities can come to your awareness.

Thinking too hard about how to start has kept you stuck in doubt and delay. Taking any of the actions in the startup checklist will get you moving.

You can’t see everything in advance of acting. Some moves require that you make a choice and act first. Then only after acting will your optimum path will be revealed.

Please do not rush to answer.  The function of these questions is not to find answers, but to create expanded awareness.  By asking and allowing them some space, your consciousness is enhanced.  Living with these questions will bring you new possibilities.

If you weren’t capable of succeeding in your new business the original idea would never have even come to you in the first place. That’s how awareness works. If you get a strong intuitive hit on a desire – you have the capacity to pull it off.

If you believe in your own individuality you’re already ahead of the game. Having the faith to invest time and resources into your own inspiration gives you an edge in this world where mimicry is so often embraced. Here’s another reason to feel good.

1. Trust your gut

Your life has been trying to guide you for years now. Your enlightened future self knows how the lack of vocational freedom is killing your spirit. What do I need to acknowledge that I already know?

The news media and our risk adverse culture like to scare the hell out of you by broadcasting all sorts of business failure statistics. What they seldom recommend is to consider the considerable upside. You need to balance the fear by looking at all the things that could go right for you once you quit your job and start a business. Make a list of them right now by responding to this question. What are all the really wonderful possible outcomes that could come my way when I start my business?

3. Assess your energy

You can feel the drudgery of repeatedly being told what to do when you start yet another uninspiring on-the-job project, right? What you’re feeling is the heavy energy of obligation. If entrepreneurship is right for you when you imagine the freedom of self-employment you’ll feel light and expansive. That’s your signal to say yes and proceed. You can read your energy easily. Just ask how does this possibility make me feel?

4. Expand Possibilities

Decision-making is far easier than we think it is. The only reason why you haven’t already made the decision to quit your job and start a business is because the options you’re considering aren’t as attractive as remaining where you are.
It’s obvious that you need to do is to expand your possibilities until you can see one or multiple options that are clearly better than staying in the slavery of employment. What follows are nine provocative open-ended questions. These questions are not designed to be answered. Instead ask them and live with them then you’ll feel the lift of expanding awareness. In a few days completely new possibilities will begin to surface. Write the options down that are clearly better than remaining enslaved.

Select the questions or write your own, that feel expansive to you and ask them frequently.

  1. What if discovering and developing my ideal business is far easier than I can now imagine?
  2. What if my business becomes a huge success because of a big demand for my unique services?
  3. What choice could I make that would help me see what I don’t yet see?
  4. What if everything that I think is wrong with me, is actually a greatness I have not yet received?
  5. Where can I put my energy now that will create greater clarity today and in the future?
  6. What is required that would expand my awareness far beyond what I now think is possible?
  7. What business possibilities would be fun for me now and in the future?
  8. What if just by asking questions I could see the ideal business for me?
  9. What choices, questions and consciousness would make this transition easy and effortless?

5. Choose the option that lights you up

Look at all of the new business options you’ve written and imagine operating each business. Which would you be proud to tell others about? Which one would you be eager to market? When you imagine operating each business which one lights you up with delight? Choose that one and get started.

Successful business startup decision–making is an inside job. As long as your fear is clearer than the business option you’re stepping into, you’ll stick with the fear. Yet if you take these five small steps you’ll feel the energy of aliveness rush in to guide you. Hesitate no more. Humanity awaits your special gift and you are the only one you can give it.

Traditional Business Startup Advice is Not the Advice You Most Need

Do a Google search for best business startup advice and you will find it chock full of advice like: write a business plan, hire a good attorney and accountant, be sure you choose the right tax entity for your business and build a strong social network.  business startup advice

All of the above is stuff that you might need to take care of eventually but it’s the wrong business startup advice for the prospective entrepreneur who wants to start strong and last long.

When I was developing my first business six years before I became a business coach, I went the traditional route and it consisted of a lot of jumping through hoops held out by bankers, lawyers and accountants who were often afraid to take the entrepreneurial risk themselves.

Three Truths You Really Need to Know to Start a Business

 

1. Take a good hard look at the specific fears that are stopping you from making your move.  They aren’t real. You’re more ready to start a business than you think you are because what you think is stopping you is a much smaller obstacle than you think it is. They usually boil down to being overly concerned with the opinion of others and with losing security that no employee really has anyway. The only certain security is created by calling your own shots while enjoying the freedom of building your own business. 2. The marketplace rewards rare, authentic expression, so do not compromise. Instead follow your unique core makeup by starting a business that is developed in the way that only you can.  Success and fulfillment comes sooner and more easily by creating a new business that is ideal for you, more so than it could ever come by copying a business created by another.  The ideal business for you is an aligned match to your personal authentic makeup.  Without that alignment, to succeed, you will unnecessarily have to use willpower instead of the easier path of eagerness and inspiration.

It’s not enough just to start a business doing what you love; you must also give your clients what they need by offering it in the way they want it.  This requires personal research talking to those whom you want to serve. When your offer enters the conversation already going on in the mind of your ideal client then she knows that you care and understand her situation. That’s why it’s imperative to understand your distinct edge in the marketplace. When you do you can make your offer in a way that will elicit a strong emotional response from your best potential clients.

It’s far greater to be in the quest of personal greatness than to be playing it safe and not even be considering the possibility.  Or defending all of the practical (fearful) reasons why you cannot declare yourself in pursuit of your greatness.

Start a Business & Quit Your Job – Enough Talk

I recently sent an inquiring email to a past coaching client and friend (we’ll call him Joe) asking for an update on a dream business he’s wanted to start. He’s been talking about getting this business started for 7 years. The thing is, I did this guy a disservice by the way I asked about his plans.

The subject line read: Ready to talk yet?

Body of message: Let’s get your plans off hold and get them moving. I’d love to hear an update. Regardless of where you are I’m sure there are effective actions you can do now to develop your business.

Joe’s response: Would love to talk to you Tom. Do you have some time to get together? Can you call me at your convenience?

Since Joe responded that he would love to talk and that’s where I realized my mistake. I was not helping him start a business by offering to do more of the same thing that has kept him in this waiting state.

If you’ve wanted to quit your job and start a business for a long time and haven’t perhaps you can relate.

Talk only gets you so far. You are more ready to act than you think you are and there is ALWAYS  an optimum next step for you to take.  (See strategy session offer at the end of this post if you want to know your optimum next step.)

Talking more about it is the last thing this guy needs. Yeah Joe’s a talker with a heart of gold and I’m sure that he’s talked to everyone he knows about how to start his business by now. He’s probably talked to most of us more than once.

But Joe doesn’t need to talk things over any longer. He needs to act without further delay.

My response: Of course we can talk and even meet for coffee if need be. But first I’d like you to get really clear on where you are, where you want to be and the obstacles that are in your way.

Why? Because I don’t think I’d be serving you by just talking. Haven’t you done enough “talking things over”? Isn’t it time to decide what you want and act?

So how about this? Please pause, take a deep breath and answer these questions.

1). What is the current state of your project?

2). If things went really well where would you like it to be in 90 days? Six months?

3). What are the top three obstacles stopping you?

Five Essentials to Choosing the Right Business

"choosing the right business."How did you choose your business?  Did you choose it based on who you are or did you allow the circumstances and relationships in your life to choose it for you?

If you think you may have chosen incorrectly or if you haven’t even chosen yet – these five essentials will show you how to choose the right business.

I work with corporate employees who want to confidently quit their jobs and start a business.  Choosing a business that brings you alive is essential for your success but just doing what you love isn’t enough.

Just like the prospective entrepreneur who has yet to choose, existing business owners will benefit from knowing the five essentials for choosing the right business.

Existing business owners could be just one small adjustment away from success.  New business owners can start right the first time.

Money and clients are attracted to confident enthusiasm so both need a small business blueprint that inspires taking frequent action confidently and enthusiastically.

These five essential elements are not linear.  Instead imagine  a five sided pentagon of success.

  1. Sell the product or service that you are most eager to create. Eagerness leads to willingness which leads to action which leads to success. Eagerness is a natural response to authentic desire and only exists in the absence of fear.  Business can be a drag without natural eagerness.
  2. Work in your business on the activity that gives your deepest gladness. Deep gladness goes beyond love. Gladness is love with deep meaning.  What really matters to you matters because it is deeply aligned with your core makeup.  Isn’t it kind of stupid to start a business that doesn’t take into account the whims, talents and values of the founder?
  3. Start a business serving who and what you care about the most.  There is good reason for your experiences. Life is not a random event.  You’ve seen what you’ve seen and been though what you’ve experienced in order to give a damn about someone or something.  It’s time for you to take a stand and serve where you really care.
  4. Make a difference by giving customers the solutions that they most need.  In order for your business to thrive someone, somewhere has to really need what you’re selling.  There has to be some meat in your offer that someone is emotionally hungry for.  Quit talking about how you do what you do.  That’s too light of a meal.  Instead hit them hard with direct messages that speak to what they really need.
  5.  Finally offer your customers what they need in the way that they want it.  If you don’t meet them where they are they won’t recognize how much you can help.  Speak the language of those you are selling to.  Be strategic and smart by entering the conversation they are already having with themselves.  That’s how they want it.  They want it clear and understandable.

Eagerness, deep gladness and deep care enthusiastically served in a dish of what they need in the way they want it.  That’s the recipe for small business success.

That’s my favorite career coaching quote yet I now believe that there are two additional roads intersecting at that essential crossroads.

I believe that your core business calling can be found only at the intersection of these four paths.

1). the product or service that you are most eager to create.

2). the work activity that gives your deepest gladness.

3). who and what you care about the most right now.

4). what value point others most need from you offered how they want it.

Let’s look at eagerness in this article.

Just like fear cannot exist in the presence of love, resistance cannot exist in the presence of inspiration.

You can’t run out of inspiration either. I’m talking about a special vein of inspiration that is tied to right action.

I’m talking about eagerness.  Right now think of something that you are eager to do.  Does any resistance come up at all?  I didn’t think so.  Here’s a powerful distinction for you.

The relief or avoidance of resistance is, running away from what you want.

The inspiration of eagerness is, running towards what you want.

Nike is wrong! Inspiration works better than discipline. Just doing it is the old way. 

When you find and engage your natural eagerness it’s easier to get what you want because a natural flow takes over.  Here are my principles of eagerness that will tie it all together for you.

Eagerness leads to willingness which leads to action which leads to success.

Eagerness is a natural response to authentic desire and only exists in the absence of fear.

The fierce and passionate qualities of the heart are more prevalent when we are actually doing something, so the more active the experience the more authentic the desire.

Two of our most basic desires are to create and to connect.  When we are creating or connecting we have already moved from eagerness, through willingness and into action.

How To Make Your Idea A Real Business

I define a real business with two main qualifiers. One it’s authentic to you and two it pays you. Authentic business building is all about receiving money for providing value that fulfills you. That’s it.

As Steven Covey in his excellent book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People shared – Begin with the end in mind and put first things first.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Synopsis: Self-discover and clarify your deeply important character values and life goals. Envision the ideal characteristics for each of your various roles and relationships in life.

Habit 3: Put First Things First
Planning, prioritizing, and executing your week’s tasks based on importance rather than urgency. Evaluating if your efforts exemplify your desired character values, propel you towards goals, and enrich the roles and relationships elaborated in Habit 2.

This may surprise you but the first thing in turning your idea into a business is not incorporating or figuring out how to file your taxes. It’s not ordering business cards or putting up a website.

These things are all necessary but distracting steps, that can dilute your energy and cause you to avoid taking action.

No one has ever been paid for getting ready to be in business.

You aren’t really in business until you have a customer.

Are there preliminary steps that you must take to develop your idea into a business? Yes there are but they do not have to take you months to accomplish and you don’t have to write a traditional business plan.

Getting started in real business building activity is more important than writing a plan you may or may not ever follow.

Yet a written summary of the business is an essential focusing tool. Just write out what your business idea is, explain the product or service, define who you will be selling to and what aspect of your product, service, delivery or business model gives you a unique edge in the marketplace.

After you do that – then get busy building your business. A good place to start is by asking, answering and acting on these five questions.

1). What can I do now to move this idea forward into a business.

2). What are the next 90, 60 and 30 day milestones to set and hit to prove that I am doing so?

3). What are the three toughest questions I could get from someone who is testing my commitment and the idea’s validity?

4). What are my most enthusiastic and confident responses to each question?

5). How can I put myself in front of potential clients or customers now so I’m having real conversations about my real business?

Do these things first and you will create clarity and progress.

Go direct to what you want. Take action to get it and before you know it – you’ll have a real business.

Top Ten Tips For Authentic Business StartUp Success

Can you really find authentic business startup success while being practical? Yes, it’s really the only way to be happy and make money.

If I had only 15 minutes to share the best business startup advice I tell you to use these tips as your guide.

1).  Starting your own business can be challenging so you can’t play small.  Don’t hold back or water down your desires. Go for the highest vision of what you can imagine, then you’ll have more energy and others will want to support you. Pioneers don’t compromise or conform. Business success comes from the energy of holding nothing back. Give it your all and prosper.

2). Hold a grand vision of what you want. See that vision daily. Get pumped if you can’t get pumped you’ve chosen too small. If I could wave the magic wand of outstanding success over you and your business, what would that look like? Imagine that. It’s the energy of how you feel and what you see that will carry you through the tough times.

3). Authentic business startup success does not usually happen without massive, inspired action. Learn the language of marketing and how to ask for what you want. Then ask boldly and often.

4). Try lots of stuff and smile when you fail.  If that traditional advertising campaign does not yield the results you expected, try something different — maybe an online advertising or social media campaign.  Love yourself for having the courage to make frequent mistakes. Mistake making is a normal part of the process. You will not succeed without missing the mark more often than not. Love yourself even more than you think is possible.

5). Place yourself compassionately in the shoes of your customers. Be vulnerable and connect. Be human and share how you are, like they are. Tell it like it is, authentically.

6). Enthusiastically love your work, yourself, your language, your marketing, your customers, your mistakes, your joy, your pain and your trials. Love it all deeply and completely. That’s the only way you’ll care enough to persist.

7). Hold frequent conversations. This is my best business startup advice. Conversations create opportunities. You’ll see things you couldn’t see previously, by listening and expressing authentically.

8). There is a deeper, purer river of meaningful service flowing within you and you must tap it in order to flourish and thrive. When faced with critical decision go deep within. Your heart knows the way. Your mind just wants to see what others will say.

9). Always look for the sunny side. It’s there. A new business startup will not succeed without sustained focus on what’s working well. Know, think about and talk about what you want. Leave the negativity to the nightly news. Only fools think and talk about what they don’t want. Park the self-judgment permanently.

10). Practice compassion, self-love and gratitude. Look for what you truly appreciate about yourself and your business. Be grateful and build on those.
